Easy Method for Better Speed Reading

Lifehacker has a video on its site in which the presenter discusses an easy, yet very vocal method for speed reading: by repeating "A-E-I-O-U" or "1-2-3-4" out loud while reading text, you will be able to move through the words much faster.  This is because when we read to ourselves, our brain sends a signal to our larynx, which is actually doing the reading even though we're not speaking.  The larynx then sends the signal back to the brain and we get a mental image of what's being described in the text.

By repeating "A-E-I-O-U" or "1-2-3-4" while reading, we take the larynx out of the equation and our eyes do the reading instead.  You won't comprehend much from the text at first, but after awhile, your brain and eyes will be trained enough to "read Catcher in the Rye" in about 10 minutes AND understand what's going on in the story.  Definitely worth a try for those long and boring textbook passages.
